Working Style and Unlimited have teamed up for the 2010 Best Dressed Businessman Awards. This year, the awards include six categories covering the gamut of New Zealand’s most stylish men: Mr Auckland, Mr Wellington, Mr Christchurch, the Sartorial Award, the Contemporary Award and the Supreme Award — New Zealand’s Best Dressed Businessman 2010.

Think you know a snazzy dresser? Nomination forms are on the Working Style website.

Up for grabs:

The Supreme Award: New Zealand’s Best Dressed Businessman of 2010 will receive a Working Style made-to-measure suit valued at $1590, a one-year Air New Zealand Koru Lounge membership, three bottles of Penfolds St Henri Shiraz 2005, a cut and style with a Servilles creative director, a year’s supply of L’Oréal Professionnel Homme product, eyewear from the Dyrberg/Kern Men’s Collection, a personalised set of Rawlence & Horton fine social stationery and a one-year subscription to Unlimited. Total prize valued at $3803.

Mr Auckland, Mr Wellington, Mr Christchurch and winners of the Sartorial and Contemporary Awards will each receive: Complimentary Working Style suit loan, a gift from Penfolds, a cut and style at Servilles, a year’s supply of L’Oréal Professionnel Homme product, eyewear from the Dyrberg/Kern Men’s Collection, a personalised gift from Rawlence & Horton Fine Stationers and a one-year subscription to Unlimited. Mr Wellington and Mr Christchurch will also receive return Air New Zealand flights to Auckland, plus one night’s accommodation at The Langham — Auckland’s most elegant five-star hotel — including transfers to and from the awards night on 22 April 2010.

Your portfolio is full of investments that require constant loving attention, so why not look after those investment pieces in your wardrobe with the same consideration? Brothers Chris and Tim Dobbs, directors of Working Style, offer some advice on getting the most out of your wardrobe.

  • If you wear a suit on Monday, don’t wear it again on Tuesday. Hanging your suit for 24 hours between each wear will increase its longevity, allowing all the creases to drop out and the fabric to recover.
  • If you want to wear a suit every day and stay sharp, invest in at least three and employ a reconditioning and rotation policy. And no, they shouldn’t all be black.
  • A true sartorialist knows the classic pleasure of a black suit with a crisp white shirt and black tie, but also loves a navy suit with a cream shirt, spotted tie and brown shoes. The combinations are endless. We suggest you have a black, navy and grey suit in your wardrobe, along with a beautiful selection of shirts and ties.
  • Dry cleaning is a necessary evil for any well-made garment but only dry clean your suits when they’re soiled — try to keep it under two times a year. If you get dust or dry dirt on your jacket or pants, brush it off with a good natural bristle clothes brush. If your suit is impossibly wrinkled, take it to the dry cleaner and ask them for a press only. Don’t try and take to it with a hot iron — you don’t have the skills or the equipment.
  • Finally, if you stain your suit, resist the temptation to clean it yourself. Usually you’ll spread the stain and make yourself look like a failure in the process. Take it to your dry cleaner with haste. Let them do their job, and you’ll have more time to do yours.

Shouldn't Unlimited's editor Mark Revington enter the competition and lead by example? He's a snappy dresser
