Report debunks myths about entrepreneurs

Global survey shows many have corporate experience and complete higher education

Thursday, June 02 2011 || News || BY Unlimited

A new report challenges the stereotype of entrepreneurs as those with little formal education or corporate experience.

Nearly 60% of the 685 surveyed worldwide by Ernst and Young for Nature or Nurture: Decoding the Entrepreneur described themselves as ‘transitioned’ entrepreneurs who had worked in a corporate environment before working for themselves.

One third of those surveyed said their experience as an employee was their most important source of career learning, while 35% cited higher education.

For the majority of entrepreneurs, launching one venture was not enough, Ernst and Young found. 60% had started three more companies, while 20% had started six or more.

The research suggested successful entrepreneurs tend to be optimists who see opportunity where others see risk.
