Knowing staff better should be new year goal

Leadership Management Australasia report recommends managers should get better acquainted with their people.

New Year's resolutions traditionally involve shedding some pounds or cutting out a bad habit. But managers have been told that getting better acquainted with their people should be a big goal for 2012.

A New Year's Resolutions report issued today by Leadership Management Australasia (LMA) suggests managers get to know staff and make the best use of resources in order to boost productivity and performance.

Better communication as well as getting people to focus on goal-setting and high-performance activities were also important aims.

Rounding out the top five was an enigmatic suggestion to ''eat the 'elephant' one bite-sized chunk at a time''.

LMA suggested committing to these resolutions in the form of written goals with small action steps.

''Don't let another year of great but unfulfilled intentions go by ... Start now to set your goals for the New Year,'' chief executive Andrew Henderson said.

LMA, which develops leadership and management across Australia and New Zealand, also highlighted the five key leadership management issues of 2011.

The top problem areas identified this year included job satisfaction, staff turnover and generational disharmony.

It was up to leaders and managers to take a serious look at each concern, Henderson said.

They should think deeply about the potential impact on their organisation and develop specific plans to address the issues.

''Failure to address these critical issues will have a detrimental effect on the success of an organisation in 2012,'' he said.

''Planning relies on reflection, to look back to identify what has worked and what hasn't.''

Both reports were based on the company's Leadership Employment and Direction Survey, which has been running for 11 years.

Key leadership management issues from 2011:

- job satisfaction

- staff turnover

- skill shortages

- generational disharmony

- a rise in the importance of human resources management.

New Year's resolutions for leaders and managers:

- make the best use of the resources you have

- get to know your people better

- lead everyone to focus on goal-setting and High Payoff Activities

- communicate, communicate, communicate

- eat the 'elephant' one bite-sized chunk at a time.
