Christchurch's Venture Out programme will this summer bring together researchers, Lincoln University students and Canterbury businesses to tackle innovation challenges.

From October to next February students, use innovation development methods to respond to real business challenges. This could include market validation, customer trials, development of product feature requirements or early stage business plans. Students are given scholarships to work on the projects.

Venture Out was established by investment firm Powerhouse. Venture partner Tim Chapman, who organises the programme, says it has led to commercial applications and the formation of three startups in the past. Two other companies are negotiating for further investmnet and pre-seed funding of $900,000 has gone into Venture Out projects. Others have produced marketable prototypes.

More than 120 Lincoln University students have participated in 54 individual and team projects since Venture Out began four years ago.
