A novel way to create 3D models from 2D photographs has won first prize in this year's University of Auckland Business School Spark $100K Challenge.

Academics, students and university alumni dreamed up the idea and developed the technology after seeing a growing need for 3D representations in applications, for uses such as training, e-commerce, education, games, virtual environments and social networking, says Burkhard Wuensche, spokesperson for winning team Click World.

“Until now, it has been difficult for consumers without special hardware, software and skills to create 3D content,” he says. “We’ve developed a novel technology that makes the creation of 3D models as easy as taking photos.

“In contrast with alternative technologies such as laser scanners, structured lighting and sets of calibrated cameras, all customers will now need is an off-the-shelf handheld digital camera or even a mobile phone camera. The resulting interactive 3D models can be integrated into Microsoft and PDF documents, web pages and traditional computer graphics applications.

Click World was awarded $25,000 of seed capital and six months' incubation at the Icehouse.

Second place getter Thought-Wired won $15,000 seed capital and three months' incubation. It developed a solution enabling disabled people to interact with others, and with objects in their environment. The users controls the system through speech, facial expressions, eye movement and thought.

Da Vinci - which developed software to minimise waiting time at traffic intersections.

The business plan competition is designed as a launchpad for students and staff to transform ideas into a real business.

Congratulations to the Click World Team
